Leash Walking

Leash Walking Training

Does your puppy try to drag you down the street on the same leash every day? You certainly need to start on developing leash walking skills with your dog. Leash walking is essential for dogs as those puppies that walk well on a leash tend to face fewer dangers and have more fun.

Get your dog used to his leash walking collar

It is only natural for your pup to scratch at it at first. Let him get accustomed to it. Put the collar on when he is eating or playing under your supervision. Also, remove the collar only when your dog is not trying to get out of it. If you take it off when he is trying to get it off, you’re encouraging the pup to fight the collar.

It is only normal for your dog to feel strange to his collar at first. Don’t worry, your puppy will get used to the collar when handled properly. But of course, the collar needs to fit comfortably (http://www.ehow.com/how_5587117_fit-collar-dog.html). A lightweight nylon collar with a buckle or snap is always a good choice.

Adding the leash reminder as part of the leash walking training

The next step in training your dog to proper leash walking is to add a leash. Some puppies seem overwhelmed by an entire leash all at once. In such case, you can start with a string or shoelace. Eventually add length as the puppy gets used to it.

Attach the leash to the collar when your puppy is eating or playing, and let him get used to it being there. But never leave a leash on an unattended dog. It may catch on things and trap the dog in dangerous situations. Leashes are only safe under supervised times.

Leash walking training techniques

Before you pick up the other end of the leash, you need to provide some time to condition your puppy to come to you and to move with you. Using dog treats usually do the trick for this training. The treats will help your pup move in the right direction.

Remember, from the minute you pick up the leash, keep it loose. Resist the impulse to pull the leash. Work hard to communicate through your voice, body language and various motivators. Keep your attention on your mental communication with your pup, rather than communicating through the leash.

If your dog makes an attempt to pull you, you just have to stand still. This will make your puppy learn that pulling the leash is useless – it doesn't work. When things don't work, dogs and even people eventually quit doing those things, right?

You just have to be patient to turn your puppy into an obedient dog. Keep in mind that in the eyes of your puppy, leash walking needs to be a game so make it fun. And you’ll see, fun awaits you and your puppy with leash walking.
